Information on ITSS Screening
What is an STI? |
A Sexually Transmitted and Blood-borne Infection (STI) is a virus, bacteria, or parasite that can be transmitted from one person to another, especially during sexual relations. While some people may be asymptomatic, they can still transmit the disease. In the worst cases, and when the infection is neglected, STIs can cause serious problems in terms of sexual, reproductive, maternal, and child health, including genital and extra-genital symptoms, pregnancy complications, cancer, infertility, and psychosocial consequences. Fortunately, it is becoming easier to detect and treat STIs with services like TonTest. |
|---|---|
Why get tested for STIs? |
If you are sexually active, it is always best to get tested to prevent a possible infection from getting worse and to avoid any transmission. You are a good candidate for TonTest if: |
You have no STI symptoms |
You had unprotected sex |
You had sex with someone who has an STI |
You have a new partner |
You have multiple partners |
You are in a stable relationship and have stopped using condoms or dental dams. You are pregnant or want to become pregnant. |
How to avoid STIs? |
The main way to avoid STIs is to use condoms. A study shows that using condoms reduces the risk of contracting STIs like HIV by a factor of 10,000. Condoms can help prevent some infections if the infected areas are covered, but it is strongly recommended to abstain from sex if you think you or your partner may have an STI. There are also other ways to avoid contracting STIs, such as PrEP. |
What should I do if I test positive? |
If you receive a positive result, a specialized nurse will contact you to guide you. |
Should I get tested if I am or want to become pregnant? |
It is strongly recommended to get tested for STIs before and during pregnancy for your health and your child's health. |
I think I have symptoms of an STI. What should I do? |
If you have symptoms during your screening questionnaire, we recommend consulting one of our health professionals to assess the situation. Afterwards, you may be referred to a clinic for a physical exam. We will support you at every step! |
How long after exposure can an STI be detected? |
There is a so-called 'window period' during which the infection cannot be detected. If this period is not respected, the infection may not be detected or your result may be falsely negative. Chlamydia: 14 days, Gonorrhea: 7 days, Syphilis: 12 weeks, HIV: 12 weeks, Hepatitis B: 12 weeks, Hepatitis C: 12 weeks. |
